Sao Miguel Island, Azores

This tour will take you to many geologically fascinating places around Sao Miguel. During this tour, you will learn so much about the volcanic origins of the Azores! You will be picked up in Ponta Delgada at 9am straight to the first activity: a guided visit to Gruta do Carvao. This lava tunnel currently extends for about 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).

The next stop is at the Sao Roque Islet, also known as Rosto do Cao (“dogs face”). The third activity is to visit Lagoa, the Volcanological and Geothermal Observatory of the Azores (OVGA). Where you will learn about the formation of the islands and the volcanic phenomena of the Azores. After lunch in a local restaurant, we will then stop at Pico da Barrosa, holding extraordinary views of the volcanic landscape of Lagoa do Fogo. Next, we will stop at the belvedere which offers breath taking views of the Fogo volcano and its beautiful lake.

The next visit is to Caldeira Velha, an iron-rich waterfall naturally warmed by the geothermal activity. There, you can enjoy a relaxing in thermal bathing pools surrounded by a lush greenery. The next stop is the Calderas of Ribeira Grande, where you can experience volcanic activity. On the way back to Ponta Delgada, our last stop at Ribeira Seca, visiting the foundation of Largo de Sao Pedro, built during the 16th century. This is a unique vestige of the old settlement that was destroyed by the eruption of 1563.
