Sei what? Unexpected sightings in the Azores – September 2024

March to May is when baleen whales are most commonly observed in the Azores, as these migratory species generally make their appearance in the second quarter of the year. This year, however, local marine biologists noted an unusual event: sei whales have been sighted as early as mid-September! It seems their migration to warmer breeding grounds has begun ahead of time, with sei whales passing through sooner than expected. This surprising sighting presents a rare chance to better understand marine ecosystem dynamics.

Our partners in the Azores said: “During our whale watching tours, we collect crucial research data through photo-identification of the whales, providing valuable insights into their migration patterns. By understanding these patterns, we can better advocate for conservation efforts and ensure the future of these magnificent creatures.”
